Illustration Friday: Transportation

Although this looks like a sarcastic and negative image, I actually really love the subway.   I miss riding them everyday.

My thought process for this one started out in the subway but began as a simple image of somebody reading (my favorite pastime on the subway).   The paper the person was reading was going to have stories of gas prices and car accidents.   However, this soon morphed into a homeless man sleeping, and covered with the paper.  To me, the subway allows people the freedom to travel without being tied down to a car or gas, or insurance.  Its freeing.  Even a homeless person can get around the city.  So freeing that, being here in Minnesota, the New York subway seems like a faraway distant paradise. Almost an exotic land. Therefore, I put in the poster for the airlines, as both a form of transportation and a symbol of that dream vacation.

The negative side of this image comes from the homeless man who is only able to transport himself to far away places in his mind.  This is also linked to the happy pill up in the corner.  Dreaming and pills are both ways people transport themselves to better places.

As for the color of this image, I went with soft yellows and oranges for the subway and background to make them more fantasy and vacation like. While, the homeless man is a cold blue reality.

I LOVE THE LINE - BUT ESPECIALLY THE CONCEPT OF THE FREEDOM RIDE... FOR THE HOMELESS MAN.
YOU ARE VERY COOL WITH YOUR IDEATIONS.
